Canadian Tire Hillside
Film Editor, Producer, and Actor for Canadian Tire Film Crew
The Client
Canadian Tire Hillside is a locally owned and operated department store located in Victoria, British Columbia. It opened in 2016 and was at the time the second-largest Canadian Tire in Canada. Today it is now the fourth largest in Canada and remains the largest in British Columbia.
In 2018, the Film Crew was established to create short films showcasing the store and its employees for the Canadian Tire Hillside Facebook Page. The film crew is made up of a professional scriptwriter and producer, production assistant, cameraman, editor, social media manager, and various actors. All members are current staff with the exception of the odd actor.

The Process
To begin the process, there is usually a Film Crew meeting to discuss the plans for upcoming films. This is where the overall concepts, ideas, and timelines for the films get discussed. Once a concept is decided, we confirm our roles for the project and the script-writer begins to work on a script.
When the pre-shooting work is done, we announce a shooting date with a casting call. If we are lacking actors, film crew members already in other positions will fill that role. The scenes are shot in repeated chunks to help make it easier for the editor to construct the film.
As the editor of the film crew, it is my job to construct the film, find copyright-free music, and try to condense the film to under two minutes. I also have begun adding post-production graphics to the films using programs such as Photoshop and Canva. I begin my process by organizing the shots and uploading them to Adobe Premiere Pro. I then will upload a soundtrack for the film and begin constructing the film. Once everything is in place, I will usually send the first draft over to make sure I am on the right path and continue polishing the film while I wait for critiques. I like to think outside the box when I am editing and I always want to make sure the film I made does line up with the producer's vision.

The Result
On average I make around three drafts before I have a final version of the film. The general concepts of the film are typically approved but there usually is some additional polishing that needs to be done. Once the final film is approved and finished, I send it over to the social media manager along with a script to post. In return, the films appear to be a big hit and are now broadcast in the store at Canadian Tire Hillside.
